THE AREA

According to written documents relating to the town of Algorfa and its history, 2015 marked the 225th anniversary of its establishment as a neighbourhood unit with administrative and political status. In other words, it became what we understand today as a municipality in 1790 by virtue of a Royal Provision granted by Charles IV to the marquesses of the same name.

It is true that thanks to the great work of Father Furgús, archaeologist and Jesuit, it has been established that Algorfa had its first inhabitants in remote times, specifically the Neolithic period, 3rd Millennium BC, but the first modern reference to this population is placed in that year of the 18th century.

Thus was born this new town whose beginnings were not easy at all, as the neighbouring towns of Almoradí and Rojales put many obstacles in the way of the municipal independence of the newly created place of Algorfa, which was the subject of a long dispute between the Marquises of Algorfa and the neighbouring municipalities.

Algorfa was primarily dedicated to irrigated agriculture (oranges, lemons, artichokes), having undergone a considerable change towards the service and tourism sector .

HERITAGE

Montemar Castle is a stately home built in the late 18th century and belonged to the Counts of Casa Rojas ever since. It was never used for military purposes, generally serving as a summer residence for its successive owners. Its style is somewhat French-influenced. It has two square towers and two circular towers with ashlar cornerstones. The main tower has turrets at its corners and crenellations with their crests sloping outwards. It features a square courtyard surrounded by a gallery on the first floor.

Parish church. Dedicated to Our Lady of Mount Carmel, it is located, as is typical in all the towns of the Vega Baja del Segura, near the Town Hall and opposite the Plaza de España.

The Hermitage. It stands atop a small hill, making it visible from almost anywhere. It is one of Algorfa’s most representative landmarks. Built at the beginning of the 20th century with stones from the Algorfa quarry.
