THE AREA
The town of Cabo de Palos, originally a fishing village, is primarily a tourist destination known for its gastronomy, especially its “caldero del Mar Menor”, a local dish made with rice and fish from the area. It boasts a wide range of dining options in the restaurants and beach bars located in the port, along the promenade, and in the surrounding area.
Levante beach was recently declared one of the best places in Europe for diving, especially the Cabo de Palos and Islas Hormigas Marine Reserve. The port of Cabo de Palos is located opposite Levante Beach.
The richness and good state of conservation of its seabed have motivated its protection within the Cabo de Palos and Islas Hormigas Marine Reserve .

As protected areas, they are included within the Mar Menor’s designated open spaces and islands, with the categories of natural park , Site of Community Importance (SCI) , and Special Protection Area (SPA).

Its great natural wealth is based on arid mountain ranges, long beaches of golden and ochre sand, secluded coves, and the beautiful formation of fossil dunes, white salt flats, and mountain massifs that contrast with the blue of the sea.
THE MAR MENOR
In 1994 the Mar Menor was included on the Ramsar Convention list for the conservation and sustainable utilisation of wetlands. It is also part of a Specially Protected Area of Mediterranean Importance and is a Special Protection Area (ZEPA in Spanish) for bird life.
In 2022, Spanish lawmakers granted extra protection rights, making it the first case of an ecosystem protected by rights of nature in Europe. The Mar Menor is now legally represented by a group of ci
