THE AREA
Orihuela Costa belongs to the Vega Baja del Segura region, bordering Torrevieja to the north and Torre de la Horadada to the south. It is located some 35km from the city of Orihuela, despite being part of the same municipal area.
It has 16 km of coastline with 11 coves and beaches of fine golden sand that are bathed by the warm Mediterranean. The privileged geographical location and its excellent climatic conditions make it possible to enjoy its beaches and practice water sports throughout the year.
Orihuela Costa’s 11 beaches are recognized and accredited by official certifications from the organizations and institutions that monitor and control quality criteria. The Blue Flags, “Q” Certifications for Tourist Quality & SICTED ranking give the area the highest number of distinctions per kilometer of coastline in all of Spain.
“OC” is known for being one of the main second-home destinations on the entire Costa Blanca. It is almost entirely made up of small urbanisations in which people from central and northern Europe mainly live.
In 2000, the city was home to just 5,645 inhabitants, growing to 32,530 in 2013. It dropped to c. 20,000 in 2017, with slight annual increases since.
Over the last decade, Orihuela Costa has grown significantly in every sense, but especially in terms of infrastructure (new schools, La Zenia Shopping Mall and a large sports centre)
Torrevieja is the neighbouring city and as it is much closer than Orihuela, the inhabitants of “OC” travel here mainly to access services such as the Torrevieja University Hospital, Aquopolis or nightlife areas.
