THE AREA
Currently, the economy of Monforte del Cid revolves around bagged table grapes; a crop of excellent quality due to the microclimate in which it is grown, which makes this crop unique in its kind, with a product of excellent nutritional properties.
Throughout the year, all the processes of caring for this fruit are developed, where the placement of the paper bag that protects the bunch, delays ripening and maintains the natural elements of the crop stands out. This characteristic made possible the recognition of the Designation of Origin “Vinalopó Bagged Table Grape” in 1988.
The varieties mainly grown are ‘Ideal’, with a light muscat flavor, and ‘Aledo’, with a neutral sweet flavor and paler tone. These crops are exported to Spain and Europe, mainly.
Marble is another main industry of Monforte del Cid, producing together with the rest of the municipalities in the region 60% of the total marble production in Spain. This industry offers high quality, design and beauty products that have great national and international prestige.
Monforte also has a traditional and artisanal industry: the production of Aniseed and Liqueurs; The most famous drink being the “paloma monfortina”, whose preparation has been maintained in the municipality since the 19th century. Various varieties of liquors are distilled, including: cantueso, cinnamon, mandarin, syrups and the famous “Café Licor” Monfortino
